The craft of making tea whisks in Takayama, Nara, began some 500 years ago at the request of Murata Jukō, the founder of wabi-cha. Today, this region accounts for the vast majority of domestic production of tea whisks from bamboo and the tradition continues to be passed down through the generations.
On this tour, you will visit the home of Tanimura Tango, one of only 18 tea whisk masters in the country, where you will create your own tea whisk and tea scoop under the guidance of the 20th-generation master. Furthermore, through a special tea ceremony experience in the tea room of a practising tea whisk master and a light lunch (bento), you can enjoy a luxurious day spent in the countryside, far from the hustle and bustle of tourist spots, where you can gain a deep appreciation of the craftsmanship and spirit of the artisans who uphold Japanese culture.
